Much significa mucho o mucha. Se usa junto sustantivos incontables.

A lot of significa mucho, mucha, muchos, muchas. Se emplea junto un sustantivo incontable o en plural.

Debes de tener en cuenta el uso correcto del verbo porque a lot of puede acompañar a un sustantivo en singular o en plural. Esto es especialmente en el uso de There is o There are:
There is a lot of money.
There are a lot of shops in the city for shopping.
Puedes usar A lot of en cualquier tipo de frase: afirmativa, negativa o interrogativa. (Al igual que many)
